Just in case you’re not paying attention to the Events Page…..
Tomorrow night sees the launch of a brand new burlesque club night in Norwich.

Hocus Pocus Theatre started with their No Strings nights in the Norwich Puppet Theatre (next one 25th September, seriously, you should check the events page!) and now also run a monthly club night at Proud Cabaret in London.

There will be headline performances from burlesque super stars Chrys Columbine and Kitty Bang Bang.

Between shows the cafe bar will feature DJs Anthropologist of Deftex, Beddy Shoy of the Marvel show on Future Radio and Hocus Pocus Theatre’s very own JazzLord playing tunes from the 50s, 60s and 70s.

There will also be walkabout entertainment from Hocus Pocus Theatre and the Norfolk Brawds, the Norwich Roller Derby team, will be there spinning around and adding a touch of glamour.

I’ll be there, dressed to the nines, in fact I’m currently deciding if I have the guts to wear my Vollers corset with a pencil skirt.

Sadly I had a bit of a picture fail this weekend.
As I mentioned last week Saturday was the inaugural No Strings Boogaloo Burlesque Club Night, at the Norwich Arts Centre. I didn’t want to take out my bulky camera, and completely forgot to pick up, or even charge, my slimline, handbag friendly camera. So, thanks to the wonders of the terrible iPhone camera you will have to take my word for the fact that this is Chrys Columbine performing her rainbow act and she was very good.

Kitty Bang Bang was also excellent. In fact I probably preferred her act as she was cheekier than Chrys Columbine. No photos of that either, so just trust me.

Other things of which there are no photos include the amazing outfits on show, and the fantastic looking Hocus Pocus Theatre walkabout and Norfolk Brawds Roller Derby girls.

There are also no photos of me meeting Meghan, a blog reader who recognised me and apparently had to be goaded to talk to me by her friend Luke. I’m so glad she did as she was lovely, though I was a little flustered at being recognised from the Interweb and we didn’t stop to chat long! (If I’ve remembered any names wrong I’m sorry, there was vodka in that glass!)

Thankfully there is another of these coming up in October, so maybe I’ll actually take a camera that time?

What I CAN provide you with photos of is the fact that I can confirm I DID have the courage to leave the house in my corset.

Maybe not the best outfit photo I’ve ever taken, (in fact I’m not sure the on on my Facebook page isn’t better!) but I was in a hurry, because, as ever, I was running late. The corset is actually the top half of my wedding dress and was last worn 5 years ago, I had to add a piece of chiffon to the top as it’s a little low cut and I like to keep my nipples to myself! It take some time to get used to, and in fact I tightened it up a little after this photo was taken, thanks to some advice from Lipstick Lori to wait for the corset to warm up a little before going too tight!

I rolled my hair into a faux bob, and eschewed red lipstick in attempt to look more lady like and less scary dominatrix.

In other news. I finally got the Revlon precision eyelash glue to keep eyelashes stuck to my eyelids all night. The secret was to make sure I left the lashes to dry a little longer than usual once I’d applied the glue. So there. Precision lash glue can consider itself redeemed, and, in fact, with it’s nice thin brush it’s easier to use than the little tubes.

Is that lazy? I’m not sure, but I’m busy getting some nice posts lined up so you can stay entertained while I’m on holiday next week. Did you even know I’m on holiday next week? No? Well, now you do!

This is actually an outfit from the weekend, for some nice early evening drinks on Friday actually. Drinks that turned into late night drinks and meant I wasn’t as bright and perky on Saturday as I’d planned. It’s also an outfit only possible thanks to the kindness of strangers as the skirt and pearls were a prize and a gift respectively.

The string of pearls is a beautiful blush pink colour and were a gift from Sharon of Shallow on a Shoestring who emailed me out of the blue and simply offered to send them to me. She also sent me a Guinness keyring that doubles as bottle opener, proving she must be a regular reader who knows my penchant for beer and picnics!

The skirt I won. It came from French store Monica who ran a little competition a while back to giveaway this beautiful Bambi skirt when they reached a certain number of followers on Twitter and picked me at random.

It has beautiful hand painted deer in red on a pale pink cotton fabric that is then embellished with sequins with a red net underskirt. But I’ll be honest, never in a million years would I have bought this particular skirt for myself.

Once I had it I left in languishing in my wardrobe for a while with no idea how to style it. Although it was a perfect fit and very pretty the skirt itself is so dramatic that it needs little in the way of fussy tops, shoes or hair before it looks overdone. Pale colours seemed too excessively girly, and black felt like it would be too heavy.

In a hurry on Friday and short of clothes that weren’t already in the wash basket I decided to try it with black, and I actually really liked it. The red seemed to anchor the skirt enough that black didn’t seem too heavy with such a girly pale pink skirt, and then the blush pink pearls and open toed shoes gave it a bit of balance and a slightly pin up vibe.

So, not only is this outfit a thank you to the generosity of strangers, it’s a lesson to try things and experiment with your wardrobe more.

Shall I say that again?

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Retro Chick is the Cision Top 10 UK Vintage Clothing Blogs!
Last week I got an email about this, which I mentioned on Facebook and Twitter, but I didn’t want to say anything here till I was sure that it was true and I hadn’t fallen asleep and dreamt it.

Cision are a company that deal with PR, communications and media professionals providing them with information to help them do their jobs. Amongst all the other stuff one of the things they do is maintain lists of the top blogs in their niche.

And I’m in one! See….

There’s some pretty amazing company on that list too. You can read the full list here.

I’m super chuffed, I’ve been writing this blog for 2 1/2 years, but it’s only when I moved it to it’s own domain in 2009 that anyone really read it, and it’s been growing so quickly. According to my Google Analytics in July Retro Chick had over 3 times the number of visits than in July 2009, and that makes me pretty happy!

It’s also made me start wondering about where I’m going and what I’m doing with Retro Chick. This blog and associated shop is my full time job, but so far I’ve managed it in a pretty ad hoc, rambling kind of way. If people are actually reading it then maybe I should get a bit more organised…..

I have plans for the future, so here’s to being able to put them into practice!

specially devised Alfred in Hitchcock Friends quiz.
