Direct Buyer Beware!

December 8th, 2011 by admin

Many websites allow for people who are online shopping to make what is called a ‘Direct Buy’, which is purchasing goods directly through the website. Often, the site will offer a significant discount for such things, but use caution. Despite the apparent deal, hidden dangers may yet lurk.

When making a Direct Buy, shoppers put themselves at significant risk of a direct buy scam. This risk is exacerbated by the fact that they surrender valuable financial information like credit card numbers to a virtually unknown merchant. While many internet retailers are indeed trustworthy, the anonymous nature of the internet allows unique opportunities for identity thieves, con artists, and worse, to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers without consequence. Very frequently, the websites responsible for such scams are based in far-flung countries where shoppers who may wish to voice direct buy complaints would be completely incapable of achieving justice.

While utter paranoia is not advisable, in order to avoid a direct buy scam it is a good idea for shoppers research the company they plan to purchase from. A simple Google search can turn up valuable results, and most legitimate retailers will provide buyer testimonials which can provide valuable insight for the discrete shopper.
